Obstructive Sleep Apnea Breathing
Sleep Apnea is characterized by loud or heavy snoring interrupted by the stopping of breathing for more than 10 seconds. The word “apnea” literally means “without breath.”
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition where the upper airway collapses during sleep and causes a partial or complete blockage of airflow. Snoring occurs when air attempts to pass through this collapsed airway causing the tissues to vibrate, but when the airflow is severely disrupted, your breathing stops for a few seconds until your body responds by waking you up. These events can be as short as a few seconds or as long as a minute or two and typically happen hundreds of times per night.
