Staying fit and healthy is essential, but many people can forget about their oral health. You might think a quick clean twice a day is enough to keep your mouth healthy, and it’s a good place to start, but there is a lot more you can do. If you want to maintain good oral health you need to have a good morning and night routine, and avoid certain things. Toothache is not only uncomfortable, but it can also be a sign of a bigger problem. If you’re suffering from a toothache, here are some tips to help you manage that pain and avoid it in the future.


Clean and Floss Regularly

As mentioned above, cleaning twice daily is a good place to start when it comes to your oral hygiene, but make sure you’re doing it right. Manual toothbrushes are fine, but if you want a deep clean buy an electric toothbrush – you’ll notice a big difference in how clean your mouth feels afterward. You should clean your teeth for about two minutes each time, but don’t use too much pressure otherwise you risk irritating and eroding your gums. You should floss at least once a day as well, as plaque and bits of food can get stuck in-between your teeth and your toothbrush can’t always reach these areas. Finally, rinse your mouth out with fluoride mouthwash to get rid of any residue and freshen your breath.

Go to Your Check-up Appointments

You might hate going to the dentist, but the longer you leave it the more likely there is going to be a problem. You should see your dentist twice a year for check-ups to make sure everything is in good shape and to spot early warning signs of issues like gum disease or decay if there are any. Getting your teeth cleaned by your dentist at least once a year is also a good idea as they have the right tools to get rid of stubborn stains or plaque build-up.

Use Anti-inflammatory Medicine

If you do experience toothache the best thing to turn to is over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines such as Aspirin. If you want to use more holistic treatments, consider clove oil, or look at using CBD products and hemp cream for pain. Usually, a toothache is due to plaque build-up or a swollen gum, so these anti-inflammatory treatments can ease the pain.

Don’t Ignore It

If the usual over the counter pain relief doesn’t work and the pain persists, make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible. It’s likely that you have an infection and will need antibiotics to treat it. Don’t ignore it, as this could lead to much bigger problems which will be harder to treat and could lead to other health risks.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Finally, if you want to avoid or manage your toothaches, simply avoid consuming sugary drinks and foods. Sugar encourages tooth decay and cavities, which in turn will lead to more sensitive teeth and pain later on. To make sure this doesn’t happen, think twice about what you’re eating and how that is affecting your oral hygiene as well as your overall health.
