People around the world are realizing what it’s like to have a beautiful smile that they are proud of, thanks to the help of cosmetic dentistry. With the help of cosmetic dentistry, you can take that dreary or otherwise unappealing smile and turn it into something that will light up a room. Your smile says a lot about you, so it’s important that it’s saying the right thing. Here’s a further looking to cosmetic dentistry and what it can do for you. What Is Cosmetic Dentistry? A cosmetic dentist is one that is trained and educated to specialize in treatments that will drastically improve the way your smile looks. Unlike a regular dentist, who likely is just looking at your teeth and gums to ensure that everything is healthy, a cosmetic dentist can alter the physical appearance of your teeth through a variety of different treatment options. What Options Are Available? When it comes to treatment options for cosmetic dentistry, it really depends on how your natural teeth look. For example, if you already have straight teeth and you just want them to be a bit brighter, teeth whitening could provide the cosmetic enhancements that you are looking for. On the other hand, if you have crooked or misaligned teeth, you may instead want to consider dental veneers or even braces. There is a wide variety of different options to choose from, and your cosmetic dentist can assist you in making the best choice for your teeth. How Long Does It Take? The amount of time that will be needed for your cosmetic dentistry treatment will varying greatly based on the type of treatment that you get. In most cases, teeth whitening is something that can be done in under an hour, so it won’t take much more than a long lunch break out of your schedule. However, getting veneers or a crown placed will likely take a few appointments. It’s best to sit down with your cosmetic dentist and find out how long it will take, but you can rest assured knowing that it’s worth the wait. Will The Treatment Last? If you keep up with your oral health by brushing and flossing daily, your cosmetic dental treatments should last for quite some time. Each person is different, as are the circumstances, but many cosmetic dentistry treatments will last for years, if not longer. Why Consider Cosmetic Dentistry? For those that are embarrassed by their teeth, they may feel self-conscious about their smile. This may stop them from being social, or others may even think that the person is always sad or angry. However, when you have a smile that you love to show off, then everyone in the room will know that you are a happy person. In addition, they’ll also think that you take really great care of your teeth and overall hygiene. Cosmetic dentistry could be the treatment that you’ve been searching for. If you are looking to make cosmetic enhancements to your smile, consider how these treatments can help.

Ward Orthodontics will be starting a quarterly blog to help provide both information and answer any questions you may have. You may submit questions directly to Dr. Ward at dward72077@aol.com or simply email your thoughts to the office at info@ward-orthodontics.com. For our first blog, I would like to address a question that seems to becoming more and more relevant. I am frequently asked, whether in the office or in a social setting, "my dentist told me my daughter (son) needs braces and he can take care of the problem just like an orthodontist".  First and foremost, THIS is categorically untrue!  OK, I got that out of the way so let's talk about what an Orthodontist is and is not. An Orthodontist is first a dentist. He or she attended dental school for four years and once graduated, applied to an Orthodontic Residency. The majority of orthodontic programs will only accept an applicant who graduated in the top 5% of their dental school class. Most orthodontic programs last 30 to 36 months and require the resident to complete a Masters Thesis. This specialization requires the resident to not only master basic sciences like anatomy, microbiology and the physics of tooth movement but he must become the authority on facial growth. The Orthodontist has the responsibility of working with a growing child and a complete understanding of how a face grows is imperative to successful treatment. Since the dentition comprises a large percentage of our face, a thorough and qualified orthodontist must also possess a knowledge of the study of art as it applies to the human face. Facial esthetics and the relationship of the teeth to our face is a priority. We, at Ward Orthodontics, are one of a select few offices in the United States that practice a Faces F1rst philosophy regarding diagnosis and treatment. Following graduation from an orthodontic residency, the orthodontist begins a lifelong journey of continual learning. Orthodontists that achieve American Board certification have gone the extra step to provide an enhanced level of care for their patients. In addition to Board Certification, two of the oldest organizations within the specialty, The Charles H. Tweed International Foundation and The Angle Society, offer the orthodontist a continuous path for excellence. So, can a general dentist provide the same service as an Orthodontist? You be the judge. One word of caution though, it is much easier to treat a person right the first time than try and fix it later. In future blogs, I will be discussing such topics as early orthodontic treatment, why extractions are sometimes needed, patient cooperation and any other topics you desire. I will always include peer reviewed research articles to support the opinions rendered. I hope you find this information helpful. Please check out our website for more information about Dr. Ward and his philosophy about orthodontic treatment. Copyright ©2014 Dr. Dennis D. Ward, DDS, MSD

The root canal is a kind of dental procedure that is performed when decay in the tooth has the chance to damage or has killed the tooth. During the procedure, an endodontist will remove the pulp from the tooth center and will fill the pulp cavity. This will help prevent a painful infection in the pulp from developing which is likely to affect other teeth. This procedure is also done to treat infections that have developed in an abscessed tooth. As a result, this relieves toothache, promotes healing, and stops infection. A root canal procedure is performed by general dentists or practitioners who specialize in diseases of the tooth pulp. Root Canal Procedure The dentist will start by numbing the gums with a jelly-like substance. When the gums are numb, the dentist will then inject an anesthetic that will numb the entire gums, teeth, tongue, and the surrounding skin. In some instances, a nitrous oxide gas is used to lessen pain and help the patient relax. The Dentist in Summerville might separate the decayed tooth from the rest using a small sheet of rubber placed on a metal frame. This is a protective rubber sheet that helps prevent liquid from entering the mouth. Then the dentist will make use of a drill and other dental tools in order to remove the pulp and fill its inside part, below the gum line, with medicine, some temporary filling material, then a final filling. When the root canal is done, a crown or cap is needed. When using the crown, the dentist needs to remove the decay and will make an impression of the tooth. The technician will make the crown, one that will perfectly match with the drilled tooth. The tooth can be fitted with a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent one to be made and cemented. After Surgery After the surgery, the lips and gums would often remain numb.  Then, the patient may feel some throbbing pain which can be treated with pain medicines like ibuprofen or stronger prescription painkillers. When taking medicines, it’s important to read the instructions. Why Do You Need A Root Canal? The procedure is necessary when there is tooth decay that is likely to leave permanent damage or have done so to the pulp. How Well This Works? This works by removing the pulp inside of the tooth and replacing it a filling. This effectively treats and prevents infection. What are the Risks? If there is an infected tooth, bacteria can enter into the bloodstream and will cause infection to the different parts of the body. Those people who have a difficult time fighting off an infection may have to take antibiotics prior and after the treatment. Since root canal can remove the pulp inside of a tooth, the tooth will be more fragile and might break easily when it’s not covered with a crown. A root canal needs to be performed as immediately as possible to be spared from severe infection, which can greatly damage the bone that surrounds the root, while saving the other tooth.

Dental care can be a luxury some people simply are not able to afford. Due to this, when living in Tulare County, CA, it is necessary to find ways to locate affordable, low cost dental care services in the area. Although it might seem difficult to do, it is possible to locate these kinds of locations. Some dentist practices do specialize in affordable dental services, you just need to know how to locate these facilities. Contact United Way The United Way is an excellent non-profit organization that is able to help with all sorts of different needs. While the organization does not provide specific dental care itself, it does have a list of the local free or reduced cost dental services in Tulare CA. Due to this, you just need to head over to the United Way website and look up your specific zip code. From here, you are directed to the local branch, which can then ensure you are given all of your necessary information. Many of these locations are income based though, so you might want to contact the different dental care facilities ahead of time, just to see what the cut off point is for your income. Income Based Look up income based dental practices in Tulare, CA. There are going to be several that do provide this sort of service throughout the area. Many dentists understand the importance of receiving exceptional dental care, without paying the high price tags. These dentists receive a good amount of funding from the local government, federal funding and from insurance companies, all of which helps chip away at the price so you are able to cut down on your dental costs. Granted, you may not have access to some of the latest services for tooth replacements and other, more extensive needs, but it does vary from location to location. Dental Schools Local dental schools are a great way to take advantage of inexpensive dental coverage and services. At a dental school, you are going to have access to dental students who are at the end of their schooling and are on the verge of becoming professional dentists. All of these students are watched over by licensed dentists as well, so if they ever have a question, they are able to bring in the professionals. This is an excellent option when you just want general tooth cleaning services or if you have a cavity. When it comes to some more extreme services, such as a root canal or removing teeth and having replacements installed, it is something you need to discuss with the dental school to find out more about the process. This way, you can determine if going with the dental schools is the right option for you. However, it is going to provide you with a much more desirable price than what you might pay at other dentist offices around the city. The next time you are in the market for a new dentist but are in need of saving money, there are several different options for helping you locate a local cost dentist. You are able to go through the United Way and use their resources for helping you locate such a dentist. You can also search for income restricted dental practices, or simply head into one of the local dental schools and have the advanced students work with you. Regardless, there is always a way for you to cut down on the overall cost.

Dental Crowns Dental crowns are ideal for those who have chipped or cracked teeth. Let’s face it; accidents happen all of the time. The concerning part is that some people will let these dental emergencies go unattended to for quite some time, which means that the tooth will start to decay and need more work once it’s finally seen to. When this happens, your dentist may suggest that dental crowns are the way to go. Dental crowns can be placed directly on top of your broken tooth, adding stability and strength to the foundation. Bridges For those who are missing teeth in their mouth, dental bridges is likely going to be the best way to go. Dental bridges can be placed in the mouth and affixed to the jawline. What’s even better about Invisalign is that it often takes much less time than typical braces. Partial Or Complete Dentures Finally, just because you are getting older doesn’t mean that you have to deal with the idea of losing your teeth. For some people, no matter how well they take care of their oral health, age may catch up to them and they may begin to lose teeth. When this happens, your cosmetic dentist can outfit you with a set of partial or complete dentures. Not only will dentures make your smile look great, but they’ll also help you be more healthy by being able to chew food properly. There are a variety of cosmetic dental options for those who are looking to have their smile fixed. Talk to your dentist about the trends and innovations listed here to determine what may be best for you.

This way, when you do go in for your dental checkups, you can reduce the chances of having a cavity and show off your pearly whites. Although there are dozens of hygienic tips you should follow, these are the top five important and easy to do tips. 1. Brush At Least Twice a Day You've heard this one time and time again, but it is worth repeating. You really need to brush your teeth at least twice a day. After breakfast in the morning, brushing your teeth is going to not only remove your morning breakfast debris but also the build up from the night before. Brushing at night before bed is going to help clean off your teeth, mouth and gums before bed, but, if you have the chance, brushing after lunch is a good idea as well, especially if you are a coffee drinker or smoker. This helps reduce the stains your teeth are likely to develop from these activities, plus it is going to give you fresh breath throughout the rest of the day, especially after you devour your tuna fish sandwich at lunchtime. 2. Brush Your Gums and Tongue Brushing is not just about focusing on your teeth.  While your teeth do receive all of the attention, it is not the only part of your oral health. It is the same as going into the shower and washing your hair but not the rest of your body. You need to brush your gums, the roof of your mouth and your tongue. Plaque and other food debris clings to just about anywhere in your mouth, so washing these areas are not only going to help keep your mouth clean but it also helps avoid gum and mouth diseases such as gingivitis. 3. Floss at Least Once a Day Make sure to floss. It is something far too many people do not do on a regular basis, and while you might tell the dents you do floss, they can tell rather quickly whether you do or not. Your tooth brush is simply not able to clean in between the spaces of your teeth, so who knows how long that apple skin has been stuck between the two back teeth of yours. With floss, you can clean out the debris stuck between your teeth. Plus, there are different devices now that make it easy to floss, if you have never been a fan of the string or tape versions of floss. 4. Eat Calcium Your teeth and gums are both made up of calcium. Not eating enough calcium not only weakens your bones, but it also weakens your teeth and oral health as well. So, the next time the server at your favorite restaurant asks if you want cheese on top, feel free to say yes. Just make sure to brush your teeth later. 5. See Your Dentist It is very important to see your dentist every six months. It can be hard to see if your teeth have any sort of problem, but your dentist can spot it and help stop growing cavities or other problems from developing further. This is an extremely important checkup for you to make.
