In dental practice, people think that it is not a big deal if they skip the checkups a few times; after all, they are taking good care of their teeth by brushing and flossing regularly. Dental practitioners have heard their patients say that they do not need to come because there is nothing wrong based on their assumptions. Before you make such a conclusion, an experienced and reputable dentist in Coral Gables shares the negative impact that you may be exposed to by failing to visit your dentist. You are at higher risks of getting tooth decay. Bacteria are useful components in the digestive system. They are useful in breaking down the foods that we eat. However, just like other living organisms, they need to feed to live. They do so by absorbing the nutrients as well as other excrete wastes. The end result is a plaque in the mouth and if it stays in the mouth for more than 12 hours, it starts to harden and it may end up forming tartar which can only be removed by a dentist. Failure to visit a dentist makes the tartar and plaque to weaken the enamel thus leading to teeth decay. It is recommended that you should visit your dentist in Coral Gables at least every six months. You are exposed to contracting gum diseases. When the plaque and tartar develops, it not only cause tooth decay but it also causes damage to the soft tissues. The damage causes irritation and infection that may result in gum diseases. While the early stages of the gum disease have very few warning signs, if left untreated this infection can cause soft tissue recession, bad breath or even loss of teeth. You can contract oral cancer. One of the most important things that you should get checked whenever you visit your dentist in Coral Gables is the screening of oral cancer. In as much as you have gone to be checked on other things, a highly experienced dentist has the knowledge of how healthy facial, as well as oral structures should look and function. Therefore in case of an unusual condition, they will be able to note and treat it while still in the early stages otherwise it will cost you so much more if you fail to visit your dentist. With the above three effects of failing to visit your dentist, it is important that you should always include your dental visits in your diary.

Dry mouth is more than a feeling you get when thirsty. It is a condition that occurs when your salivary glands are not making enough saliva to keep your mouth wet. Other names for the condition include xerostomia, doughmouth, cottonmouth and pasties. This condition not only affects your mouth. Saliva has enzymes, which helps with digestion. It prevents tooth decay by neutralizing bacteria acids, washed away food particles and limits bacterial growth. A dry mouth can go from being a nuisance to having an impact on your general health. It can affect the health of your gums and teeth, your appetite and your ability to enjoy food. What Causes Dry Mouth? This condition occurs for a number of reasons. The causes fall under four main categories, which include medications, age, cancer treatment and nerve damage. You should check the side effects on your medication. According to the American Dental Association, the most common reason for dry mouth is lack of saliva. Saliva is the mouth’s primary defense against tooth decay and maintains the health of the soft and hard tissues in the mouth. Saliva washes away food and other debris, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth, offering first-line protection against microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Many prescription and OTC medications cause this condition. These medications include decongestants, antihistamines, muscle relaxants and antidepressants. Dry mouth can also occur from autoimmune disorders. Sjogren’s syndrome is a severe autoimmune disease. It makes your white blood cells attack your salivary glands and mouth. Other causes may include methamphetamine use, smoking, nervousness and stress. If you want to prevent oral issues, then you should schedule regular appointments with your dentist. Symptoms of Dry Mouth It is common for your mouth to feel dry from time to time. However, you should get worried when this feeling does not go away. If you suspect you have dry mouth, then you should look for certain symptoms. These symptoms include: Bad breath Mouth dryness Cheilitis Taste disorders Sore throat A painful tongue is another symptom of xerostomia. It causes you to feel a burning sensation. This symptom can occur all of a sudden and can be severe. Other symptoms may include tooth decay, thrush, sticky saliva and salivary gland infections. Dry Mouth Treatment Options Treatment depends on what is causing your dryness. You should start by checking your medication. If the dryness comes from medication, then you may need to change to another drug. It helps to get your salivary glands checked by a physician. If your salivary glands can still produce some saliva, then your doctor can prescribe you medication. There are medications available for stimulating your salivary glands. Taking the medication allows you to produce more saliva. Common medications used for stimulation includes Evoxac and Salogen tablets. Artificial saliva is another treatment option for xerostomia. This treatment works by using artificial saliva to keep your mouth moisture. Dry Mouth Diagnosis To diagnose xerostomia, a medical doctor or dentist will need to examine your mouth. Your physician will ask you about your medical history. He or she also will perform imaging scans and blood tests of your salivary glands. There are common tests used to make a diagnosis about xerostomia. These tests include a biopsy, saliography and sialometry. A biopsy is when a small sample of salivary gland tissue is taken. The saliography takes a radiographic examination of your ducts and salivary glands. This test can identify masses and salivary gland stones. The sialometry is a procedure that measures the flow rate of your saliva. Dry Mouth Prevention You can take a number of steps for prevention from xerostomia. When eating a meal, you should sip on water or a drink that does not contain sugar. Hydration is critical to the production of saliva. Some drinks add to the dryness. You should avoid sodas, tea, caffeine and coffee. Oral care products can help with producing more moisture in your mouth. You should get a recommendation from your dentist. Sugarless gum and candy is another way to stimulate saliva juices. It is also a good idea to avoid tobacco and alcohol. These things are very drying on your mouth. The addition of sugar and acidic foods will only add to your condition. It may help to sleep with a humidifier at night as well. Complications Associated with Dry Mouth If you experience constant mouth dryness, then it can be uncomfortable. It can also have severe consequences to your oral health. The dryness is irritating for the soft tissues in your mouth. These conditions cause your soft tissues to become irritated and more open to infections. Saliva is very cleansing without it you have to worry about tooth decay. However, it is important to keep your gums and teeth healthy to prevent complications. What does a dental assistant do? A dental assistant’s responsibility is so much more than simply “helping the dentist.” Essentially, a dental assistant supports the whole team administer quality dental care — and they are so much more than an extra set of eyes, ears and hands. A dental assistant ensures daily operations run smoothly among other major priorities, with the top three being infection prevention, acting as a team member as well as welcoming patients and providing comfort and care, particularly during high-stress situations. A dental assistant’s day is action-packed and is reliant on positive relationship-building with both other team members and those walking through the door seeking treatment. So, one might presume that it’s necessary to stay put with one practice permanently in order to form these connections and carry out your duties in the most effective way. However, nothing could be further from truth. There can be so much more to being a dental assistant than merely applying your skills in a single practice. You can take your expertise to the road in many different scenarios. Dental assistant talent on the go You’ve got mad chairside skills. You’ve got a dynamic personality. You want to make a difference, and see the world while you’re at it.Here are some outstanding ideas to do just that... Missions and volunteering Quality oral care is a fundamental part of positive overall health and wellbeing. Unfortunately it remains inaccessible for various reasons, with lack of insurance, transportation and income being the primary factors for most people, particularly those who live rurally in the US. In developing countries, it can be a bit of a different story. In Liberia, for example, the need for dental care is described as “dire.” As of 2014, Liberia had a total of three certified dentists to serve a population as high as an estimated 5 million people. Moreover, with an 85% unemployment rate, people would likely not be able to afford dental care in the first place. Volunteering or joining a mission group offering oral healthcare can make up a critical part of a dental assistant’s practical learning and achievement. It allows you to grow your skills set, network with other like-minded professionals and help others in need. And opportunities like these abound, both at home and abroad. You could make a difference in the lives of economically disadvantaged people anywhere from a day in a rural community, to two weeks in an entire village in the Nepalese hills or the Honduran rainforests. And not only are you helping others in need, you are gaining invaluable experience to develop into a well-rounded practitioner. RDH and B.Sc. graduate Jennifer Hasch emphasizes the importance of providing dental outreach to underserved communities from a practitioner’s standpoint: “Connecting with other clinicians who are determined to make an impact, and gaining experience with mobile and portable dentistry will help prepare you for the clinical challenges you may face.” As far as a mobile opportunity locally or statewide, schools and community health centres can be a good place to start. You can locate a participating community health centre here. Additionally, you can serve children from low-income families through Give Kids A Smile, an initiative supported by the ADA Foundation, or contact the Dental Lifeline Network (DLN) for similar volunteer openings. You can find a number of opportunities to extend your care beyond your local or national communities. If you find yourself available for one week or more, Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Dental Education Program and Global Dental Relief offer extraordinary chances to make significant contributions to patients living in underserved areas. Mobile dentistry services Some dental assistants feel the need to move around, relieving themselves of the pressure or mundanity of working in the same dental environment day in, day out. Others like to work in various practice scenarios to gain a wealth of experience with different patient profiles, procedures and processes, particularly when just starting out. If working in rural communities or travelling overseas is outside your comfort zone, mobile practice still provides professional development in a variety of locations closer to home. Placement agencies can help in this regard, matching you up with appropriate assignments based on their needs, and your skills and availability. Some agencies will act as an intermediary between you and the practice to ensure working conditions are adequate and hourly wages are paid on time. Others even arrange housing for you. A placement agency can offer temporary or contract positions, temporary contract-to-hire, or full-time permanent placements. Many will oversee Workers Compensation issues as well. Another new advancement in the temporary placement arena are digital job-finding platforms.. These applications allow for dental practices and dental employees alike to search for suitable matches. Cloud Dentistry is one such option. As a dental assistant, a digital job searching platform allows you create a professional profile that includes your education, credentials and experience for potential employers to view. You can upload a photo, set your days and hours of availability, and let the magic happen. Practitioners can view your profile and make direct contact with you if they feel you are a good fit, cutting out the placement agency middleman, and giving all participants more autonomy in their assignment coverage. Final thoughts As a travelling dental assistant, you have the opportunity to give back to communities experiencing crises in their oral hygiene. And volunteering or working for a mission can be one of the most rewarding elements of your career — and to patients’ lives. Beyond that, placement agencies and mobile dentistry applications allow you to live a life of travel, while practicing your passion. So what are you waiting for?

However, avoiding your dental visits do not help. According to research, people who skip dental visits are more prone to having dental diseases, such as tooth decay, gum disease, tartar build up, etc. You can sustain either your dental phobia or your smile. Thanks to the technological advancement, dentistry has undergone a drastic change to eradicate dental phobia among patients. Sedation and anesthetics Many people experience needle phobia, and these people usually pass out or experience low blood pressure on seeing dental needles. Plainfield IL dental clinics offer anesthesia to their patients. Before your visit to dentist, inquire which sort of anesthesia, s/he will provide. One option is topical anesthesia (numbing gel) that numb the gums so that the patient does not feel the needle piercing into your gum. Another type of anesthesia is nitrous sedation (laughing gas). There are many dental clinics providing Nitrous sedation Plainfield IL. Nitrous oxide has a very soothing and relaxing effect on the patient. One of the most recent innovations aimed at making these treatments pain-free is a local anesthetic device known as the wand. The device gives a controlled supply of anesthesia to the patient. Some dentists also use IV sedation that causes memory loss for a limited period and keeps the patient relaxed and comfortable. Laser Dentistry: Many patients are afraid of the drilling sound. With laser technology in the dental treatments, it becomes easier to reduce the dental drill, needle phobia, and vibrating sensations when it comes to the tooth decay. Lasers also come handy in periodontal treatment, root canal procedures, and teeth whitening practices. Using this technology, patients become less fearful of having dental visits and start a proper oral hygiene routine that leads to improving oral health.   Dental Hypnosis Many experts criticize the use of anesthetics. It helps the patient’s mind to stop thinking about the fear internally by distracting it by an external object like pen. After that, the hypnotist will suggest you to relax making you close your eyes and inhale deeply and slowly. In the next stage, you will make an image of dental surgery into your mind. You will imagine all steps of the surgery in a very calm and composed way. The process not just helps you overcome your needle phobia, but also treat the chronic facial pain. Hypnotism is very rare in dental surgeries. Some dentists have a knack of it, while it is better to have a hypnotist who is expert in treating dental anxieties. Pediatric Dentists At times, the dental phobia is a product of a negative experience in childhood. Usually, children do not feel comfortable about the whole dental office and the irritation caused by the dental procedures. To prevent your kid's discomfort turn into an extreme dental phobia, it is better to take them to a dentist, specialized in kids dentistry. Pediatric dentists are usually experienced in reducing the dental fear among kids and, on bonus; they help your child develop a good hygiene routine.

Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way. In fact, it’s the fastest-growing field in the dental industry. With every passing year, achieving the coveted “Hollywood smile” gets easier and more affordable. Thanks to all the recent advancements in cosmetic dentistry, people nowadays have better access to treatment options that will help them acquire a smile they’ll love. The myriad of options available has become so extensive that it’s hard to keep track of everything that cosmetic dentistry has to offer. To save you the hassle, we did a round-up of the most popular trends to date. 1. Teeth Whitening Never Goes Out Of Demand This trend has been around for ages and – without a doubt – it’s here to stay. This time, however, people are starting to take the "dazzle" factor down a notch and opt for more natural-looking white teeth. Most of us will never stop wanting whiter teeth. After all, it’s the key to a beautiful and radiant smile. But for different reasons (mainly due to our lifestyle, habits, and vices), we can’t seem to get rid of teeth stains no matter how hard or often we brush and floss our teeth. So what else can we say but thank heavens for teeth whitening? Despite the busy and sometimes crazy modern lives we lead, a radiant smile is never out of reach. 2. Dental Veneers: When Teeth Whitening Just Isn’t Enough Unfortunately, teeth whitening is not for everyone. Some teeth need more attention than others. If your teeth are heavily discolored, crooked, or have gaps between them, dental veneers might be the solution you're looking for. This popular trend in cosmetic dentistry is perfect for adjusting and correcting severe tooth problems. The veneers, typically made of porcelain, are placed on top of your existing teeth. The result? Improved appearance of your teeth and a more beautiful smile. 3. Dental Implants – The Prosthetics of Dentistry Veneers are great, but they can’t bring lost teeth back. Luckily, dental implants can! You don’t have to worry about missing teeth making you look old anymore. In case you lost one (or a few) of your pearly whites to extraction, this is a way to bring your youthful smile back. Yes, “getting implants” may have a scary ring to it, but this is one procedure you don’t have to fear because they’re pretty standard these days. Dental implants aren’t just for show. Aside from helping you look better, they make your mouth healthier and your jaw stronger too! 4. The Art of Gum Contouring For those with gummier-than-usual smiles, gum contouring is your key to a perfect smile! A top trend in cosmetic dentistry, this procedure makes your teeth look longer and shapelier for a more visually appealing smile. Anyway, here’s a bit of trivia: your dentist will use a laser to reshape your gums. The idea of getting your mouth “lasered” for the sake of beauty may not resonate well with some people, but gum reshaping isn’t just about appearances. It also promotes better teeth and gum health. 5. Invisalign: Not Your Regular Braces Braces evolved with cosmetic dentistry. Long gone are the days when metal was the only option people have to straighten their teeth. To be fair, metal braces delivered, but you must admit they're not very comfortable or pleasant to look at. If you don’t want the “brace-face,” go for Invisalign! These clear braces yield the same result as traditional ones but are more comfortable. And the best part is, people will hardly notice you’re wearing them! Let’s face it: many people have been mocked and bullied for having metal across their teeth. As an almost-invisible and removable alternative, Invisalign minimizes the physical unease of wearing braces. More importantly, it gives you confidence and makes you feel better about yourself. Whatever kind of tooth problem you have, there’s likely a cosmetic dentistry procedure to correct it and make it look better. Even more incredible are the variety of payment options and financing plans available. It’s time for a smile makeover! What are you waiting for?

Now the term “not so considerate” is kind of an unfair description cause the generation of dentists in the last 10 years have gone through a different education compared to dentists educated say 20-30 (or more) years ago. In the recent decade, the emphasis on patient psychology, comfort and autonomy has reached its highest level through history of dentistry. This in itself should be a comfort for people with dental anxiety, at least to a degree. This can also translate to the following requirements of a dentist: -The patient must not feel any pain in the dentist’s chair -The dentist is not allowed to do anything unless the patient gives his/her complete informed consent -The patient should be relaxed in the dentist’s chair during any procedure Now, purpose of this article is to give dentists, dental students and frankly all adults with dental anxiety insight into the most effective techniques that can be used to rehabilitate patients with odontophobia. For more info on techniques to manage dental anxiety (tannlegeskrekk), visit vinterbrotannklinikk.no The first essential thing in this process is for the dentist to take his/her time to talk to the patient. The talk should not only be about teeth and mouth. But it should also be a casual friendly talk in order to establish a friendship and a degree of trust in the patient. While the talk is progressing, it's much better if there is a calming background music with even soothing scents in the room. This talk should be like a friendly chat between two equals. Patient should be sitting in upright position in the chair. The sitting position of the patient must be in the same height as the dentist. In this manner, dentist will not appear as an authority figure. The latter should be avoided at all costs. During this talk, patient should be assured and convinced that there must not be any pain when sitting in the chair. No pain whatsoever. This is of course assumed that the dentist has this capability. After this, the session should start with a palpation of the facial and cervical (neck) muscles. This is perceived as very soothing and a trust-promoting by almost all patients. The palpation of facial muscles should anyways be part of the routine check-up that a dentist does. This can reveal existence of possible myalgia, bruxism, TMD, spasms or any other parafunction in the biting pattern (occlusion) and musculature. At this stage, the patient should have lost 50% of his/hers stress and concerns. During this procedure, the dentist should keep communicating with the patient making sure that she or he is comfortable. Having humor at this stage will also increase the trust in the patient. The next stage will be giving small short opportunities for the patient to come up and rinse. This removes the feeling of being locked into someone's hands. While doing this, asking the patient if he or she is OK. At this stage, the level of the patient’s anxiety must be evaluated. If there is room for progress, then the dentist will move forward. At this stage, the dentist should attempt a careful and gentle scaling and polishing. This should preferably be done with manual instruments rather than ultrasonic instruments with water spray. This will keep the fuss and the ongoing action to a bare minimum. This phase must be done very carefully as to not hurt the gums and provoke slightest amount of discomfort. This entire starting process is meant to underscore the idea that “It shouldn’t hurt when sitting in the dental chair”, in the patient’s mind. During the first visit of a new patient with dental anxiety, it is always a bad idea for a dentist to perform anything more complicated like extracting wisdom teeth. The process described above aims to get the patient accustomed to dental treatment, the new dentist, and the idea that dental treatment can actually be completely pain-free. Therefore, the dentist must understand that the patient needs the time to process the things that happened and little by little getting rid of the dental anxiety after each visit free from discomfort and pain. Now, this process can be slower for some and faster for some other. It is the dentist’s responsibility to recognize where in the rehabilitation process the patient is. This process can be combined with a good sedative like Flunitrazepam if necessary, to make things even easier. This will make the rehabilitation faster and more profound. If the patient knows about this alternative, he or she could demand it from the dentist.
