Needing a root canal may not make you feel very comfortable, which is why it’s important that you find a reliable dentist that will ease any concerns that you may have. Most dentists will be able to perform a root canal, so it likely won’t be a problem finding one. However, because a root canal is such an intense procedure, it’s not just about who you choose but rather how you feel when working with them. Here are some tips for finding the perfect dentist for your root canal in AZ.   What’s Their Experience? It’s important that you work with a dentist that is trustworthy and knowledgeable. Typically, this experience and knowledge will come with a lot of education and training in their industry. Your teeth and oral health is incredibly important. Therefore, it only makes sense that you’d want to work with the most competent person possible. Consider first asking your dentist what their experience is working with root canals, and this will hopefully make you feel better about working with them.   What Types Of Treatments Will The Dentist Perform? Once you visit your dentist, they’ll be able to perform a variety of tests that will be able to better evaluate whether or not you need a root canal. One of the first things they are likely to do is give you an x-ray to evaluate the health of your teeth below your gums. If they have further concerns, they may also consider percussion testing or thermal testing, both of which can determine if you need a root canal. In the event that the results show that you do need a root canal, your dentist can typically act quickly to help you fix the problems that you are having.   Is Their Office Maintained And Clean? Every dentist office should be clean in order to provide you with safe operating conditions. However, you may be surprised to see that some dentists don’t nearly take the necessary precautions that they should to ensure your safety and healthy. If you look around and feel as if the dentist’s office isn’t clean, it’s going to make it difficult for you to get comfortable or feel relaxed during the root treatment. Therefore, it’s important that you can feel that comfort by being in a place that you feel best about.   Do They Come Recommended? It doesn’t hurt to ask your dentist for references from previous people that they’ve worked with. In doing so, you can contact these people and see what the experience was like working with the dentist. Even if you get cold feet about cold calling, then you can at least consider how quickly your dentist is willing to give you references. For example, if they hesitate or don’t seem to want to give you references, it could be a bad sign. On the other hand, if a dentist is willing to be as open with you as possible, it should show you that they come highly recommended and you can trust them for your root canal treatment. Although getting a root canal may not be exciting, the process can be much easier if you have a dentist you can trust. Consider the tips here for finding the right dentist to work with for your root canal.

The best way to make sure that you don’t have gum disease is to visit your dentist on a regular basis. But if you are in-between visits, here are 8 signs that you will want to look for to see if you may have gum disease. Discolored Gums One of the first signs that you can look for to determine whether or not you have gum disease is the color of your gums. Normally, gums should be a fleshy pink color. However, gums that are at risk of gum disease will start to turn bright red. This red symbolizes an infection in the area, so it’s something that you’ll want to keep an eye out for right away. Sensitive Gums Not only will your teeth become discolored, but you’ll also notice changes in sensitivity as well. Your gums may become incredibly sensitive to the touch, which can make it difficult for you to brush or floss daily. Bleeding Gums In some extreme cases, your gums may be so sensitive that they start bleeding. Bleeding gums is a sign that things are getting severe, and you should visit your dentist as soon as possible. Filmy Buildup Around The Teeth If you look in-between your teeth and notice that there is a filmy residue building up, this is another sign that you may have gum disease. The residue will likely be white or cream colored, and it won’t go away with just a normal brushing. Bad Breath Bad breath, or halitosis, is another concern to look out for with gum disease. If your gums are infected, then your breath will consistently smell bad because your mouth won’t be able to properly cleanse itself to smell any better. It’s Painful To Chew When you begin to eat and chew food, pay close attention to the pain that you experience. If the pain is extreme and excruciating, then this could be a sign that you have gum disease. In the event that the pain is just mild, it might mean that you can catch your gum disease problems before they get any more serious. Receding Gum Line If your gum line starts to recede and work its way up your teeth, this is a sign that you have gum disease. In order to get this to stop happening, you’ll need to visit your dentist as quickly as possible. They can help cleanse your gums and avoid any further recession of the gums. Your Teeth Begin To Loosen Finally, it’s important that you look at the overall strength of your gums. If you begin to notice that your teeth start to loosen over time, this is a sign that you could have weakening gums. When your gums no longer have the strength that they need, then your teeth will be the first to be compromised. If you want to keep your teeth strong and in place, then it’s important that you have your gums checked out as quickly as possible. The condition of your gums is vital for your overall health. If you want to stay as healthy as possible, be sure to watch out for these symptoms and contact your dentist if you notice that you may have gum disease.

For those that have damaged or injured any of their teeth, it’s likely that their dentist will suggest that they get dental implants in order to protect them from further problems. Some people will hope to avoid dental implants, believing that their teeth will be fine and they can go for a period of time without getting the issue fixed. However, without dental implants, patients run the risk of sustaining even greater issues in the future. Here is a look at some of the pros and cons of dental implants, in order to better help you determine whether or not you should get this type of dental treatment. Pro - It Will Restore Your Smile If you have a missing tooth, or even missing teeth, it may wreak havoc on how you feel about yourself. It might make you self-conscious and you could even be embarrassed when it comes to getting into interpersonal settings. However, getting dental implants will help to restore your smile. Once you regain the confidence that you need, you’ll be smiling from ear to ear and nobody will even know that you’ve had any type of dental work completed. Pro - You’ll Have Stronger Teeth Dental implants will make your teeth much stronger. When a tooth is damaged or when it comes out completely, many people don’t think about the effect that it has on other teeth surrounding it. However, your mouth is set up in a way so that all of your teeth rely on one another for strength and stability. If there is a tooth missing, then other teeth will begin to shift around and out of place. However, getting a dental implant will keep all of those teeth in place and keep your entire oral structure stronger. Con - It Can Be Costly One of the biggest complaints that people have about dental implants is that the treatment can be costly. This is especially true in the case of a multiple tooth replacement treatment. The good news is that your insurance provider may cover your implant for you. In addition, it’s important to think about the long term in this situation. If a patient does need a dental implant and they don’t get it completed, it’s likely that they’ll have much more expensive and extensive work needed in the future. However, they can avoid more expensive bills by simply getting a dental implant now. Con - Visiting The Dentist Is Unnerving Another reason that people avoid dental implants is because they don’t like visiting the dentist. It’s fair to say that visiting the dentist can be a bit unnerving, especially when you consider the fact that a stranger is poking around in your mouth with a bunch of foreign tools. However, it’s important to keep in mind that dentists are trained specialists with years of experience. You are in good hands when you are working with a dentist who will help you with the dental implant process. Needing dental implants may cause confusion as to whether or not you actually want to get this treatment done. However, after weighing the pros and cons, it’s obvious to see that it’s certainly something that is much better to do, rather than letting it go unseen to.

People around the world are realizing what it’s like to have a beautiful smile that they are proud of, thanks to the help of cosmetic dentistry. With the help of cosmetic dentistry, you can take that dreary or otherwise unappealing smile and turn it into something that will light up a room. Your smile says a lot about you, so it’s important that it’s saying the right thing. Here’s a further looking to cosmetic dentistry and what it can do for you. What Is Cosmetic Dentistry? A cosmetic dentist is one that is trained and educated to specialize in treatments that will drastically improve the way your smile looks. Unlike a regular dentist, who likely is just looking at your teeth and gums to ensure that everything is healthy, a cosmetic dentist can alter the physical appearance of your teeth through a variety of different treatment options. What Options Are Available? When it comes to treatment options for cosmetic dentistry, it really depends on how your natural teeth look. For example, if you already have straight teeth and you just want them to be a bit brighter, teeth whitening could provide the cosmetic enhancements that you are looking for. On the other hand, if you have crooked or misaligned teeth, you may instead want to consider dental veneers or even braces. There is a wide variety of different options to choose from, and your cosmetic dentist can assist you in making the best choice for your teeth. How Long Does It Take? The amount of time that will be needed for your cosmetic dentistry treatment will varying greatly based on the type of treatment that you get. In most cases, teeth whitening is something that can be done in under an hour, so it won’t take much more than a long lunch break out of your schedule. However, getting veneers or a crown placed will likely take a few appointments. It’s best to sit down with your cosmetic dentist and find out how long it will take, but you can rest assured knowing that it’s worth the wait. Will The Treatment Last? If you keep up with your oral health by brushing and flossing daily, your cosmetic dental treatments should last for quite some time. Each person is different, as are the circumstances, but many cosmetic dentistry treatments will last for years, if not longer. Why Consider Cosmetic Dentistry? For those that are embarrassed by their teeth, they may feel self-conscious about their smile. This may stop them from being social, or others may even think that the person is always sad or angry. However, when you have a smile that you love to show off, then everyone in the room will know that you are a happy person. In addition, they’ll also think that you take really great care of your teeth and overall hygiene. Cosmetic dentistry could be the treatment that you’ve been searching for. If you are looking to make cosmetic enhancements to your smile, consider how these treatments can help.

Ward Orthodontics will be starting a quarterly blog to help provide both information and answer any questions you may have. You may submit questions directly to Dr. Ward at dward72077@aol.com or simply email your thoughts to the office at info@ward-orthodontics.com. For our first blog, I would like to address a question that seems to becoming more and more relevant. I am frequently asked, whether in the office or in a social setting, "my dentist told me my daughter (son) needs braces and he can take care of the problem just like an orthodontist".  First and foremost, THIS is categorically untrue!  OK, I got that out of the way so let's talk about what an Orthodontist is and is not. An Orthodontist is first a dentist. He or she attended dental school for four years and once graduated, applied to an Orthodontic Residency. The majority of orthodontic programs will only accept an applicant who graduated in the top 5% of their dental school class. Most orthodontic programs last 30 to 36 months and require the resident to complete a Masters Thesis. This specialization requires the resident to not only master basic sciences like anatomy, microbiology and the physics of tooth movement but he must become the authority on facial growth. The Orthodontist has the responsibility of working with a growing child and a complete understanding of how a face grows is imperative to successful treatment. Since the dentition comprises a large percentage of our face, a thorough and qualified orthodontist must also possess a knowledge of the study of art as it applies to the human face. Facial esthetics and the relationship of the teeth to our face is a priority. We, at Ward Orthodontics, are one of a select few offices in the United States that practice a Faces F1rst philosophy regarding diagnosis and treatment. Following graduation from an orthodontic residency, the orthodontist begins a lifelong journey of continual learning. Orthodontists that achieve American Board certification have gone the extra step to provide an enhanced level of care for their patients. In addition to Board Certification, two of the oldest organizations within the specialty, The Charles H. Tweed International Foundation and The Angle Society, offer the orthodontist a continuous path for excellence. So, can a general dentist provide the same service as an Orthodontist? You be the judge. One word of caution though, it is much easier to treat a person right the first time than try and fix it later. In future blogs, I will be discussing such topics as early orthodontic treatment, why extractions are sometimes needed, patient cooperation and any other topics you desire. I will always include peer reviewed research articles to support the opinions rendered. I hope you find this information helpful. Please check out our website for more information about Dr. Ward and his philosophy about orthodontic treatment. Copyright ©2014 Dr. Dennis D. Ward, DDS, MSD
